1. The Volvo 242 GT displays both a tough and elegant exterior, with its spoiler and exclusive wheels. Its red-and-black decorative stripes and black door sills contrast strikingly with the distinguished silver metallic paintwork.
2. The spoiler helps reduce air resistance, and thus fuel consumption at higher speeds. It too is finished in silver metallic with red-and-black detailing.
3. The double red-and-black decorative stripe continues across the rear. Like the other models in the 240 series, this year’s rear end has a completely new look, including a new wraparound taillight design that allows the indicators and rear lights to be seen from the side as well.
4. The special sporty design that characterizes the exterior of the Volvo 242 GT is consistently reflected in the interior. The elegant silver metallic exterior is matched with a black textile interior. The red trim on the door panels and dashboard reappears as longitudinal stripes in both the front seats and the rear seat. Fully fitted graphite-grey carpeting completes the look.
Suspension The front suspension is of the MacPherson strut type. The rear axle is rigid and mounted in longitudinal rubber-bushed trailing arms, with two torque rods and a transverse rod. Anti-roll bars front and rear. Extra-stiff springs and gas-pressure shock absorbers at the rear.
Braking System
The braking system has two circuits. Each circuit operates both front wheels and one rear wheel. Brake pipes are made of corrosion-resistant alloyed copper. Disc brakes on all wheels, ventilated at the front. Brake servo. A pressure-reducing valve in each circuit prevents the rear wheels from locking before the front wheels during heavy braking. The master brake cylinder is designed as a stepped piston type to maintain normal pedal pressure in the event of circuit failure. The parking brake acts on the rear wheels through separate drum brakes.
Dashboard
Padded dashboard. Adjustable instrument lighting. Six-digit odometer plus trip meter, fuel gauge and coolant temperature gauge. Tachometer and clock. Warning lights for charging, oil pressure, high beam, turn indicators, parking brake and brake circuit failure. Indicator lamp for failed exterior bulbs and engaged overdrive.
