Founded in 1975 by John Z. DeLorean, the DeLorean Motor Company produced only one model: the iconic DMC-12 sports car (1981–1982). Noted for its unpainted stainless steel body and gull-wing doors, its brief production was overshadowed by financial turmoil, but the car achieved lasting fame as the time machine in the Back to the Future films.

The DeLorean DMC-12 was produced for a very short time and is generally considered to be a single generation. There are no official "generations" in the way major automakers designate them. However, the car is commonly broken down by its model years: 1981, 1982, 1983 (Only a small number of cars, which were unsold 1982 models, were officially re-VINed and sold as 1983 models.).
