Activated via a button on the infotainment touchscreen, X-Mode allows the driver to change modes to suit theconditions.

With the push of a button on the touchscreen, X-Mode draws on intuitive rough road driving capability, to safely and confidently negotiate low speed driving by controlling engine torque and traction control.

In deep snow and mud, drivers select the mode which generates maximum torque to help prevent bogging, while snow/dirt mode controls torque to reduce wheel slip on loose and uneven surfaces. X-Mode can maintain maximum traction by controlling AWD drive force distribution across each wheel, along with front and rear axle limited slip function and Hill Descent Control. And with the Subaru Outback AWD Sport XT and Outback AWD Touring XT boasting the additional torque and power of a turbocharged Boxer engine, X-Mode takes control to deliver a robust off-road performance.

Whether traversing mountain ranges or hauling the camper trail, the Subaru Outback AWD Sport XT and Outback AWD Touring XT have an increased 2,400kg1 braked towing capacity – with the extra power, more torque and increased acceleration of the 2.4-litre turbocharged Boxer engine.

For those with a lighter load to tow, and an eye on fuel efficiency, the 2.5-litre Boxer engine confidently pulls an impressive 2,000kg braked towing capacity. Both powerful and reliable engines work in tandem with core Subaru technologies and the Subaru Global Platform (SGP). This streamlined framework features a rigid suspension base which helps maintain ideal tyre contact and grip, delivering responsive steering, confident cornering and optimum control.

Second pair of eyes.

The fourth generation EyeSight® Driver Assist system, with enhanced functionality and collision avoidance features, is standard on the Subaru Outback.

This world-renowned preventative safety system operates like an everattentive second pair of eyes - to provide warnings, plus braking and steering intervention that is designed to help reduce driver burden, prevent accidents and save lives.

The EyeSight® Driver Assist system incorporates a host of primary functions - Pre-Collision Braking System, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lead Vehicle Start Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Departure Prevention, Lane Sway Warning and Emergency Lane Keep Assist.

Enhanced features include Lane Departure Warning with vibrating steering wheel alerts if the vehicle is about to depart from its detected lane. Lane Centring Function works with Adaptive Cruise Control to provide steering assistance, accelerator and brake functions to maintain position in the detected lane. Autonomous Emergency Steering, using EyeSight® cameras and the rear radar system, assesses the presence of other vehicles before taking evasive automatic steering control. Speed Sign Recognition displays the detected speed limit in the Multi-Information Display (MID) unit, while the Intelligent Speed Limiter can automatically set the speed limiter to match the detected limit.

All knowing, all seeing.

A smart assistant to have on your side, Subaru’s Vision Assist uses embedded cameras, advanced monitors and radar technology to detect vehicles and obstacles you can’t see. Combined with the forward vision features of EyeSight®, Subaru’s Vision Assist empowers drivers with a sixth sense to support preventative safety..

Subaru’s Vision Assist can give drivers a greater awareness of the world around them. Blind Spot Monitor uses sensors to make lane changes safer, by warning of vehicles detected in the blind spot. While Lane Change Assist can detect fast approaching vehicles and warn the driver of their presence when changing lanes. Rear Cross Traffic Alert can warn the driver that another car is approaching when reversing out of a parking space. Meanwhile, if the vehicle detects an obstacle behind the vehicle while reversing, Reverse Automatic Braking can apply braking if the driver doesn’t react first.

Front View Monitor uses a front grille mounted camera to capture images of the area immediately in front of the vehicle to avoid damage when parking. The Side View Monitor camera shows the vehicle’s front passenger side quarter view, eliminating this blind spot when manoeuvring the vehicle. While, Adaptive Driving Beam automatically adjusts the headlight beam to prevent dazzling other nearby road users, while maintaining a high level of light and visibility.

Subaru tackles driver distraction and fatigue with a Driver Monitoring System – Driver Focus (DMS) standard across the Subaru Outback range. This innovative system constantly monitors the driver’s attention to help reduce the chance of accidents.

Whether your journey is long or short, Subaru recognises that at times the driver may be distracted. Which is why DMS has been developed to offer another layer of safety, coupled with personalised driver convenience.

The Subaru Outback’s DMS1 uses near infrared LEDs and a camera to recognise when the driver’s attention is waning or if they start to fall to sleep. An alert can then warn the driver, reminding them to refocus on the road ahead.

The system’s intelligent facial recognition can also identify five separate drivers and then automatically personalise the cabin to their preferences - adjusting the climate control and Multi-Information Display (MID) screen. While the Subaru Outback AWD Touring and Outback AWD Touring XT can also automatically adjust the driver’s seat and door mirror position.

Peace of mind protection.

Designated crumple zones direct impact energy away from the ring-shaped passenger safety cell, while the Boxer engine is designed to slide below the cabin in a severe frontal collision.

It has always been Subaru’s purpose to design vehicles with a crucial advantage in road safety and occupant protection. While Towards Zero fatal road accidents in a Subaru vehicle by the year 20301 represents Subaru’s ambitious future target, decades of astute observation, structural development and design research has informed the remarkable safety advances built into the 5 star ANCAP safety rated Subaru Outback.

An overwhelming feeling of protection is underpinned by Subaru Outback’s carefully engineered body structure and Subaru Global Platform, including the ring-shaped passenger safety cell. The ring-shaped passenger safety cell that cocoons occupants has been designed to absorb and direct the impact of a collision around the cabin, rather than through it. Meanwhile, the symmetrical layout of the All-Wheel Drive system and horizontally-opposed Boxer engine is designed to allow the engine to ‘submarine’ under the floor during a severe frontal collision – protecting the cabin’s occupants.

In addition, the chassis structure has been engineered to include crushable zones, absorbing collision energy to effectively protect passengers. While Subaru can’t control every variable on the road, the inclusion of eight SRS airbags in the Subaru Outback, including the front passenger seat cushion airbag, can help reduce the possibility of serious injury in the event of a serious accident.
