2004 Smart ForTwo. Pure.

Whether you’re just nipping into town or heading off for a long weekend, you’ll always be on the right track with the agile Pure. The complete range of safety equipment includes the electronic stability program (esp®), anti-lock braking system (abs) and brake assist (bas). And the functional pure offers all the convenience features one could wish for: The central locking is operated by remote control with a 3-button key that incorporates a tail gate opening function, and the electric windows open at the flick of a switch. Also standard is the smart radio cd player which will move you to the sound of your favourite tunes.

Equipment. The Pure is available as aclever smart fortwo coupé or a sunny smart fortwo cabriolet with a black tridion safety cell.

The pulse is the right choice for those of a sportier disposition: Adynamic appearance, “sportline” alloy wheels and a 3-spoke leather sport steering wheel with gearshift paddles. The standard cockpit clock and rev counter give you the information you need to stay on track. In addition to the six exterior colour choices (the striking stream green colour is exclusive to this model) and the standard glass roof, the pulse has got the looks on the inside, too.The pulse features semi-transparent contrast components, seat covers in twister blue grey or twister green, instruments with white dials and much more.

Numerous special features may be included in your smart fortwo, depending on your choice of model. If you would like to tailor your car even more closely in line with your personal wishes, we can deliver your smart straight from the factory with the options of your choice.

Smart sound package. High power output, acoustics and design are all tailored precisely to your car. Comes with 2 tweeters, 2 bass-reflex speakers and a frequency switcher. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

Softouch. The softouch automatic gear program changes gears for you. And if you feel like adopting a sportier driving style, you can switch to softip at the touch of a button and take direct control once again.

Storage drawer under driver’s seat. Offers an additional lockable space and a little more tidiness inside.

Air conditioning plus. CFC-free, with programmed Light and Max functions and exterior temperature indicator with frost warning.

Luggage compartment cover. Protects against prying eyes and sunlight. It’s simple to install and can be easily removed to transport larger objects.

Vanity mirror in driver’s sun visor. No more twisting the rear view mirror. Aglance in the driver’s sun visor will show whether her makeup is still fresh or whether he has properly shaved. All this without being distracted while you’re at the wheel.

“jetline” alloy wheels. For anadded touch of zip, choose these stylish wheels (front 4 J x 15 fitted with 145/65 R 15 and rear 5.5 J x 15 fitted with 175/55 R 15).

The interior.

Pure.
Take control of the full range of functional equipment the pure hasto offer on scodic grey cloth upholstered seats. Its interior is discreet in character, featuring matte grey contrast components.

Pulse.
In the pulse, the seats and door trim are in twister green (2)or twister bluegrey. The corresponding contrast components in the cockpit are semi-transparent and coloured in green or blue. Black leather upholstery is also available as an option.

Passion.
The passion is of a stylish disposition: Seats in bungee red with red contrast components in the cockpit or in bungee grey with grey contrast components in a gloss finish. If you wish, we can also deck out your passion in optional black leather.

Bodypanels.

The smart fortwo body panels come in 7 different colours that are completely exchangeable and recyclable, do not rust and withstand minor bumps without denting. Should any panel be badly damaged, you can replace it in next to no time. A complete bodypanel fresh-uptakes barely two hours. The smart fortwo bodypanels are the first body components of their type to go into serial production,making them a truly unique feature. Worldwide.

The tridion colours.
The pure and pulse are equipped with a standard black tridion which is available as a no charge option on the passion. The passion comes equipped with a standard silver tridion cell, which is available on the pulse at an additional cost. The black or silver of the safety cell blend harmoniously with the expressive colours of the bodypanels.

Exchanging the bodypanels.
If you feel like a change, just drive to your nearest smart Centre. In next to no time we’ll exchange the bodypanels for differently coloured ones.

Engine & transmissions.

Giving the all-clear before you even start the engine: the control centre. Before you turn the ignition key and start the engine, your smart fortwo has already been busy. To be more precise, the car’s controllers are its electronic brain. They are connected to all of the car’s important functional elements and perform on-board diagnosis in a fraction of a second. Your smart will start only when everything is functioning smoothly. Any minor irregularities which are detected but which do not prevent yoursmart fortwo from being driven safely will be saved in the memory. The next time the car is serviced at the garage, they will be analyzed by the off-board diagnosis system and corrected, if necessary.

softip – changing gear without using the clutch.
The softip gear-change function is standard on all models. The sequential 6-speed transmission changes up and down automatically in response to agentle tap on the shift lever. When the vehicle is stationary, it changes automatically into first gear.

softouch – the automatic gear program.
The softouch automatic gear program with kickdown function is available asan option on all models. It is designed to respond perfectly to various driving conditions. And for a sportier driving style you can switch to softip at the touch of a button for manual gear changing without any clutch work.

Steering wheel gearshift.
The steering wheel gearshift function on the 3-spoke leather sport steering wheel allows you to change gear by means of shift paddles, without taking your hands off the wheel – in true Formula 1 style. Standard for the pulse.

The diesel engine.
The smart fortwo cdi with its direct injection turbo diesel engine weighing just 69 kg, requires an average of only 4.2 litres per 100 km. Small, efficient and all set for the fastlane. The turbo diesel engine with common rail direct injection produces plenty of torque even at low revs. The maximum torque is a princely 74 lb-ft at 1,800 to 2,800 rpm. And just to make sure you don’t get carried away, we have electronically limited the smart fortwo’s maximum speed to 135 km/h.

Common rail.
CDi stands for “common rail direct injection”. In expert circles, however, cdi stands for aquantum leap in engine technology: A high-pressure pump generates an extremely high maximum pressure of 1,350 bar in the common fuel line - the common rail – and at the injection nozzles. An electronic control system ensures that the fuel is injected into the combustion chambers in ultra-fine doses.

Safety.

The tridion safety cell helps keep you unharmed, should worst come to worst. In combination with the crash management system, it offers all-round passive protection.But before these safety features need to prove what they can do, the active damage prevention system intervenes. This system includes the anti-lock braking system (abs)with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd), electronic stability program (esp®) and brake assist (bas), not forgetting numerous effective passive safety elements such as the smart safety seats with integral seat belts, belt tensioners, belt force limiters and the full-size front and side air bags.

Put to the test.
The smart fortwo’s unique crash management system makes it one of the safest cars in the micro-compact car segment. The smart fortwo's superior passive safety has been confirmed by more than 50 crash tests carried out in accordance with the same rigorous standards as the Mercedes Car Group. In every test, the strength and rigidity designed into the tridion safety cell provided greater occupant safety than in other small cars and the deformation values measured were below all internationally recognized standards for all vehicles and in some cases the results were significantly below these standards. This is particularly true in the case of a collision between the smart and a larger and heavier vehicle.

The tridion safety cell.
In a collision, the tridion safety cell acts like the hard shell of a nut to protect you. The rigid steelframe, reinforced with high-strength solid steel at important stress points, absorbs much of theimpact energy. The cell’s transverse and lateral struts also transfer some impact energy to the crumple zones of the other vehicle involved in the collision.

The wheel as a buffer.
Smart has reinvented the wheel... as a safety element. If another car hits your car from the side, the compactness of the smart fortwo is a great advantage. Thanks to the ultra-short wheelbase, the other car will almost always hit a wheel and the suspension behind it. The front wheels are mounted on solid lateral supports which help absorb the impact energy in the event of a head-on collision. The passenger cell has been designed to remain solid and to allow doors to still open easily.

The crash boxes.
The smart fortwo coupé and cabriolet each have 2 crash boxes: The front box is reinforced with transverse members and slip tubes, while the rear box has an aluminium support. These parts and the bodypanels shrug off knocks at up to 3 km/h with virtually no sign of damage. In collisions atspeeds of up to around 15 km/h, they serve as a crumple zone and ensure that the tridion remains undamaged. Damaged parts can be replaced quickly. None of the materials employed for the lining on the exterior or interior of the smart splinter. In the event of a crash, the fuel supply will be stopped, the central locking will open.

The sandwich-type construction.
Sitting higher means staying on top in tricky situations. Thanks to the sandwich-type construction and raised seat position, the passengers are usually outside the direct danger zone in the event of a side impact. And the driver enjoys a significantly better view.

Even the best driver may end up in a skid at some time. When things get critical you can rely on the smart fortwo coupé and smart fortwo cabriolet to keep you on course within the given physical limits, thanks to esp® which plays a direct role in avoiding accidents. The seat position is raised slightly, you enjoy free visibility to either side and a reassuring feeling of firm support. You know you’re in good hands. The seats in this car don’t just carry your weight, they actually seem to hug you.

ESP® helps you stay on course because you never know what’s around thecorner.

ESP® and brake assist.
The smart fortwo is equipped with the electronic stability program (esp®),a feature which is usually only found in sedans and SUVs. The sensors recognize certain situations in good time, for example when the rear end threatens to break away, when the car under steers or when a wheel spins or loses road contact. esp® immediately throttles the engine torque and brakes individual wheels to stabilize the car. The hydraulic brake assist function makes a decisive contribution to driving safety too. It automatically initiates controlled emergency braking when you step on the pedal quickly but not hard enough, so that you don’t lose any braking distance.

The sandwich-type construction.

The seat belt tensioners and belt force limiters.
From a certain impact force, the belt tensioner will reduce any slack in a matter of a few milliseconds. The belt force limiter releases more belt carefully before too much pressure is exerted on the chest. In addition, the air bag and knee protectors ensure that the passenger is cushioned as effectively as possible in an impact.

The seat position.
The passenger seat can be pushed back 15.5 cm further than the driver’s seat. If the fortwo is hit from the side, this prevents the driver and passenger colliding with one another. It also provides the driverwith a better side view. The belt guides are integrated into the seat backrests. This is to ensure that the 3-point seat belt system offers optimum comfort for people of all sizes in all seat positions.

The safety seats with integral seat belts.
The safety seats with integral seat belts ensure that you don’t just sit comfortably, you are also well protected. They comprise a modular metal structure backed with sheet steel shells. The headrests are integral elements of the safety seats and are always in the correct position. If the smart is hit from behind, the rear crash boxes, the tridion’s transverse and lateral members and the rear-mounted engine will absorb much of the impact energy. Further impact energy is compensated by the seats with their secure fittings.

ABS with electronic brake-force distribution.
The anti-lock braking system (abs) and electronic brake-force distributioncome standard on all smart models. This enables you to steer and slam on thebrakes for an emergency stop simultaneously.

Ecology.

As paradoxical as it may sound, sometimes you have to rock the boat to keep things on an even keel. That’s why we at smart are continually questioning established practices and coming up with innovative solutions. smart environmental policy is geared to ensuring that Daimler Chrysler’s guidelines on the protection of the environment and the conservation of energy and natural resources are applied in an uncompromising manner. These guidelines play a crucial role in all our considerations. From vehicle development through production in smart villeto the recycling of many components. smart is more than a car. smart is about a specific outlook on life. Whether in jack black or lite white – essentially, every smart is green. All outsourced parts and components are developed and built in accordance with uniform ecological criteria. Instead of waiting for the problem of taking back and dismantling vehicles for subsequent recycling to come to us, we tackle it during the development phase.

smartville production.
To the left an orchard, to the right a corn field: This is the idyllic setting in which smartville nestles, and in smartville, even the buildings are ecologically compatible. All of our buildings at the industrial estate in the French town of Hambach are free of harmful substances such as formaldehyde, CFCs andasbestos. The facade panelling is made from a material called Trespa, 80% ofwhich comes from fast-growing European timber. Naturally enough, the company operates its own biological waste treatment facility, and a heatrecovery system in the area of plastics processing. After all, an ecological car can only be produced at an ecological factory.

Powder coating.
This is regarded as the most environmentally-friendly painting method there is in the car industry. Powder coating uses 40% less energy than conventional painting methods, with zero solvent emissions. Paint slurryis a thing of the past, too. Surplus powder paint is collected and 98% isreused for painting. This is just one example of the environment-friendly production processes we employ in smartville.

smart fortwo cdi.
The average fuel consumption of the smart cdi is only around 4.2 litres of diesel per 100 km. The fortwo cdi makes a very real contribution to protecting the environment. smart does without energy-intensive and expensive lightweight materials such as magnesium. Driving styles can also help to relieve the strain on the environment. High revs mean increased fuel consumption,rather than more driving enjoyment. The same goes for excessively low tire pressure and transporting unnecessary loads. Also, every smart features a digital gear display on which an arrow recommends the appropriate gear at all times for economical driving.
