The 1995 Land Rover Discovery.

In the four years since the Discovery was launched, some 110,000 owners in 89 countries from Argentina to Zimbabwe have driven 2,300 million miles. Discoverys have trekked across deserts of sand and ice, forded rivers and scaled fells, crossed cart-tracks and urban potholes, meandered up country lanes and cruised down motorways - in comfort, in safety and in style. During those years, Discovery drivers have found that they own one of the best 4x4 vehicles of our time, from the best 4x4 company of all time. And during those years Land Rover has been concentrating on creating an even better Discovery.

The new Discovery.

No matter how far your journey takes you, whether for business, pleasure or duty, no matter what the conditions, the going has always been easy in a Discovery. Now it's even easier with the introduction of the latest Discovery model. Restyled and re-engineered, the new Discovery is not just the leader of its class, it is in a class of its own.

Power and performance.
The Discovery's choice of three engines - punchy fuel injected V8i, economical direct injection turbo-charged Tdi and fuel-efficient multi-point injection Mpi - coupled with an updated, smooth, all-synchromesh five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox*, provides all the power and performance you need when driving in choked city streets, cruising on open motorways or path-finding across country.

Quiet styling.
The 1995 Discovery's clean lines have become a design classic. Now they have been refined to give a fresher, more purposeful look. The interior has been renewed to increase comfort and make instruments even easier to use, while additional protective features, such as driver and front passenger airbags t, have been intro-duced. All these changes make the Discovery not only better looking but more aerodynamic, quiet and safe.

1995-land-rover-discovery-specifications-brochure-car-back-catalogue-2 1995-land-rover-discovery-specifications-brochure-car-back-catalogue-3

Country matters.

The Discovery is part of your adventure, whatever you want it to be. It will tackle the toughest terrain, from bleakest moorland to greenest glen, from beachside track to watersoaked fen. It will take you where no ordinary saloon or estate would dare and it will bring you back again, exhilarated and refreshed.

Boxing clever.
At the heart of the Discovery's outstanding off-road ability is its powerful range of engines - V8i, Tdi or Mpi - coupled to smooth manual or automatic gearboxes*. Permanent four-wheel drive ensures the most tenacious grip and traction where and when you need it, without the need to switch drives.

The Discovery's five-speed manual gearbox has been re-engineered to make it even easier to use. All gears benefit from synchromesh, allowing smooth and precise changes through the new H-shaped gate. To complement this fluidity, the clutch has been lightened, making it easy underfoot.

The acclaimed four-speed automatic gear-box, with its revised, thumb-operated safety catch, is now available for the Discovery Tdi as well as the V8i. Of course, every gearbox offers high and low ratios, effectively doubling the number of available gears, to produce hauling power in the rough and pace when you return to the road.

In exceptionally difficult conditions, the Discovery's centre differential can be locked to deliver equal power to front and rear wheels and provide maximum traction.

A better approach.
The Discovery tackles hills and slopes that would leave ordinary saloons and estates grounded. And it crosses fords with ease, taking water up to half a metre deep in its stride.

Environmental concerns.
Land Rover vehicles are designed to enable their drivers and passengers to experience parts of the natural world inaccessible to users of ordinary vehicles. With this privilege comes the responsibility of caring for these delicate parts of the environment. To help you do so, we have produced a special Land Rover brochure full of hints and tips. Please ask your dealer for a copy of Fragile Earth.

A degree of safety.

Safety is not just a priority for Land Rover - it is part of our heritage. For decades, we have been building tough, trustworthy cars which can take all that man and nature can throw at them. That's why more than two-thirds of all the vehicles we have built in nearly half a century are still running, day in, day out.

Airbags.
Land Rover is the first dedicated 4x4 vehicle manufacturer in the world to offer driver and front passenger airbags. They are hidden in the steering wheel binnacle and passenger side fascia, so you will probably never see them. If ever you need them, they will inflate and deflate in around 0.3 of a second, having cushioned you against the force of a violent impact. Discovery airbags have been tested under all likely conditions and terrains, both on- and off-road, and will not inflate unless a sudden, severe frontal impact takes place.

Crush cans.
The consequences of even a minor accident can be expensive when major components of a car are involved. This is why the Discovery now incorporates crush cans. These absorb energy from a collision at the front, protecting both the occupants and costly mechanical parts. At up to eight mph, the bumpers and crush cans will contain any damage, ensuring that the chassis, body and engine compartment remain untouched. Even at 30mph, only minimal damage will occur to vital parts.

1995-land-rover-discovery-specifications-brochure-car-back-catalogue-5

The resilience of steel.

The legendary strength of Land Rover vehicles is based on superb engineering and design. The heart of a Discovery's stability and strength is its box-structure steel chassis and rust-free aluminium body panels. Now, with the addition of side impact bars, greater protection is offered. Again, you will probably never see them, but it is reassuring to know that they are there.

Driving position.
Safe, sure-footed handling has been designed into the Discovery, no matter where it is driven. The authoritative driving position sets you above estates and saloons, allowing you to see beyond them and to spot potential dangers ahead. The tallest driver won't feel squeezed and the smaller driver won't feel overwhelmed All switches, controls and instruments have been redesigned for clarity and are optimally sited, while the new steering wheel is tilt-adjustable, to allow perfect positioning.

Anti-lock braking.
The Discovery makes sure that you remain in control in the worst of weather and conditions, on and off the road, with a new anti-lock braking system that is constantly ready to cut in when it's needed. The system works through all four servo-assisted disc brakes to ensure steady, slip-free braking at all times.

Anti-roll bars.
The Discovery's permanent four-wheel-drive transmission provides tremendous grip through all wheels at all times. The addition of front and rear anti-roll bars absorb the pressures of cornering and help the Discovery to take tight bends firmly and confidently, with a sharper feel to the steering - without compromising its supreme off-road abilities.

Refined thinking.

Since its launch, the award-winning Discovery has not only been the best vehicle in its class on and off the road, it's also been recognised as the most stylish and striking, and the best thought-out. We've now improved many of the details that set the Discovery head and shoulders above the opposition.

Body matters.
A simpler grille is complemented by under-grille detailing matched to the colour of the body, while the windscreen is now directly glazed onto the body. The bumper end caps have been rounded off and the mirrors redesigned Alloy wheels are available for every Discovery - duo-tone brushed silver and metalic grey on Discovery ES, optional Freestyle Choice on all other Discoverys and standard silver on five-door Discovery S A choice of 14 body paint colours is avail-able, from solid autumnal shades to lustrous metallic and micatallic finishes.

Lighting up.
The headlamps have been totally redesigned to improve illumination by 20 per cent, both when dipped and on full beam, and are completely integrated into the front of the Discovery. The rear indicator and side lights are inset into the bumper, to ensure that they can be seen with the rear door open.

Sunspots.
The twin sun roofs fore and aft on a Discovery make sunny summer ventilation a breeze. Both sun roofs have been entirely redesigned to tilt and slide while minimising wind noise. They also contain twin retractable sunblinds. Manual or electric sun roofs*, combined with the Alpine lights, help the Discovery to look the way it feels - airy and spacious.

1995-land-rover-discovery-features-2-car-back-catalogue-3 1995-land-rover-discovery-features-3-car-back-catalogue-3

Cruise control.
Take your foot off the accelerator and concentrate on the road ahead with the Discovery's new incremental cruise control system. One tap on the Set button fixes the speed, which can be increased by one mile per hour each time you tap the Set button again. The cruise control is automatically disengaged by pressing the clutch or brake - you can settle your Discovery back to its previous speed by tapping the Resume button. Pressing the accelerator overides the set speed and easing off the accelerator will bring the Discovery back to its set speed. The Discovery's cruise control, like all its other instruments, is designed to make an intricate operation simple.

Electronically alert.
Protecting the Discovery while it's parked is a state-of-the-art alarm system. A key-fob remote control locks all doors and sets two types of alarm, one to scan the interior and one to guard the doors and windows. Any forced entry will trigger the alarm and automatically engage a starter inhibitor. As extra security features, a plate stamped with the vehicle identification number is embedded into the fascia and a rear load space cover can hide valuable items.

Sound ideas.
The 1995 Land Rover Discovery's superb in-car entertainment systems, Traveller and Premier, make any journey a listening pleasure. Duplicate controls for either system are conveniently positioned on the steering binnacle to allow drivers to make adjustments without stretching. Radio chan-nels, volume and CD autochanger discs can be changed and tracks selected without taking your hands off the wheel. Standard Discoverys feature an auto-reverse radio cassette, while the Traveller Audio Choice* also includes automatic frequency tracking and traffic report seeking. The Premier Audio Choicet features co-axial front speakers and a six disc CD autochanger as well.

The world of interiors.

The 1995 Land Rover Discovery is not only brilliantly practical, it's also beautifully styled. The whole car is designed as a piece, from the Granite Grey or Bahama Beige luxury of seven elegant leather seats and the leather-covered steering wheel in the flagship Discovery V8i ES and Tdi ES, to the smoothly-profiled, colour-toned fascia and dashboard.

Instrument clarity.
On all Discoverys, the fascia is trimmed in discrete Ash Grey, while the redesigned instrument housing contains electronically-operated tachometer and speedometer dials to ensure exceptional accuracy and clarity. A comprehensive bank of indicator and warning lamps keep the driver informed of all Discovery operating systems at all times.

Touches of brilliance
Other electronic devices adding to safety and convenience have been built into the Discovery. The ignition switch is now illuminated and the interior light stays on for 18 seconds after the doors are shut. Each front window descends at a single touch of a button, while modified, electrically-adjustable, heated door mirrors* not only provide excellent rear visibility but cut wind noise at speed. A buzzer sounds if lights have been left on when you leave. Electric windows and sunroofs can be closed for up to three-quarters of a minute after the ignition is turned off.

1995-land-rover-discovery-interior-2-car-back-catalogue-3

Living for the city.

The Discovery is the perfect business car, whatever your business may be, from directing finance to directing films. Its entirely new air conditioning and ventilation system is superbly efficient and will keep you cool when the temperature's rising and warm when icy winds blow.

Quiet atmosphere.
Always one of the most refined of vehicles, the Discovery's quietness under the most difficult conditions allows you to conduct confidential conversations without raising your voice. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning are completely integrated, giving perfect driving conditions inside the car - whatever the conditions outside. The system allows each front seat occupant to set heating and ventilation individually, so one can be warmer or cooler than the other. Cool or dehumidified air can be blown from any of the five fascia-mounted ventilation slots, while all rear passengers - including those in the jump seats - can benefit from individually adjustable air vents, where air conditioning is fitted. Discovery air conditioning is, naturally, CFC-free.

Room with a view.

The 1995 Land Rover Discovery gives you space, from the huge window area that offers unparalleled views of the world around you, to its seven-seat passenger capacity and exceptional headroom - even in the back. Storage throughout the vehicle, from glovebox to the rear door bin, is equally impressive.

Bags of space.
There's always been space in a 1995 Discovery to store the largest family's needs for the longest journey - and now there's even more. You'll find capacious, repositioned front door bins, map pockets above the sun visors, magazine housings at the back of the front seats and paper-holding nets on the ceiling. More containers can be found on the rear door of seven-seat Discoverys or load space sides on five-seat Discoverys.

Gloves and glasses.
Neatly fitted into the fascia of every Land Rover Discovery is a lidded glove box, allowing you to keep little items close to hand but out of sight. Between the front seats you'll find a cubby-box that doubles as an armrest - ideal for storing your favourite CDs or tapes. And when you open the lid, you'll find a set of two cup- or glass- holders. Smooth-acting, hydraulically-damped struts slide out another set of holders from under the centre of the fascia, beneath the heating and ventilation controls.

1995-land-rover-discovery-specifications-brochure-car-back-catalogue-7 1995-land-rover-discovery-interior-4-car-back-catalogue-3

Carrying it off.

The Discovery's load-bearing capacity is little short of extraordinary. It can carry a full rugby-sevens team and their kit, the ball and the yard flags - in fact, anything up to 801 kilos - with ease, so even a large family will find room to stretch their legs.

Towing.
The Discovery can also carry, for example, terracotta garden amphorae weighing up to 4,000 kilos, or nearly four tons, towed on a trailer with coupled brakes. The optional tow-bar has been redesigned to look like an integral part of the car. Electro-mechanically-controlled headlamp levelling makes sure that oncoming drivers are never blinded.

Seating.
The Discovery provides you with all the flexibility you need to juggle any combination of passengers and luggage. You might want to carry seven people, using the twin jump seats in the rear load area*, or just three or four, courtesy of the asymmetrically-split rear bench seat. Or you might need the front seats alone, and a huge flat load space with a volume of nearly 70 cubic feet.
