If there's one thing the Trooper II has proven again and again, it's that it can go anywhere and do anything.
And now that we've added a four-door Trooper II to our two-door, that just goes double. As a station wagon, the Trooper II can seat a carpool of five in perfect comfort. And if you choose our new four-door; you'l have the perfect way for them to get in and out conveniently. There'll also be 45.5 cubic feet of cargo space to get in Little League equipment, groceries and the dry deaning conveniently.
As a sports/utility truck, the Trooper II offers 71.3 cubic feet of rear cargo space with the optional rear seat folded up. 79.0 cubic feet without the rear seat.
And as an off-roader, last year the four-wheel drive Trooper Il endured an off-road test even worse than the Baja 1000 — 4 Wheel & Off-Road magazine's search for their "1985 4x4 Of The Year." They put it through exhaustive tests on the track, over pavement, and out in the field. And after 1300 relentless miles, it surpassed the Bronco, Chevrolet K10, Jeep Cherokee and the Toyota 4-Runner. And it's still the least expensive in its class.
Engine
Horsepower @ 4,600 rpm
Torque @ 2,600 rpm
One characteristic that made the Trooper II the year's best 4x4 is its powerful 2.3-liter gas engine. You can also opt for our new 2.2-liter turbo diesel engine.
Its other winning features include a 5-speed manual transmission, plus a heavy-duty independent front suspension and three undercarriage skid plates for protection.
It's even equipped with auto-locking hubs which, once engaged, allow you to shift from 2WD to 4WD without stopping. As well as a 21.9-gallon fuel tank which lets you go up to 459 miles without refueling. (Turbo diesel, 613 miles.)
And as outrageous as it sounds, the Trooper Il even lets you get a little fancy. It has seven exterior colors and two interior fabrics for starters. Then you can opt for the following frills: aluminum wheels, a luggage rack, rear seat heater, air conditioning, roof cargo rack and wind deflector. Standard on the LS, and optional on the Deluxe, are an AM/M electronically tuned stereo cassette radio with four speakers and a rear window wiper/washer and defogger. It even has bronze tinted glass standard on both Deluxe and LS models.
And deep-tinted bronze sliding side windows on the LS. (For the heat and glare of midday in the Sahara.)
The inimitable Trooper I's. They re all the station wagon, all the utility truck, and all the 4x4 you'll ever need.
