The way the Chevrolet S-10 Pickup used to be

In 1982, the newly introduced Chevy S-10 Pickup captured America's fancy. The brand-new vehicle was then only two models deep: 2WD short-bed and long-bed regular-cab pickups. Today, the S-10 continues to be one of the most popular vehicles of its kind in America. And, after seven model-years of responding to the growing wants and needs of compact pickup buyers, there are now eight S-10 models for you to evaluate. There's also an off-road appearance package called Back Country available on all 4x4 S-10 models - it gives the S-10 4x4 a rugged look. The S-10 story for 88 is a strong one:

S-10 EL PICKUP.

It's Chevy's lowest-priced pickup and a very popular S-10 model. The EL's low sticker price reflects a few minor omissions from the standard content of a 2WD regular-cab S-10 with 6-foot box. A full-size spare is replaced with a compact spare tire. There is no AM radio in the EL model. The EL features incandescent headlights, not the standard S-10's halogen units. There is no dome light in the EL cab. However, there are several EL options available (including air conditioning and AM radio) to dress the S-10 EL up quite nicely.

STANDARD S-10 PICKUP.

The very things that first attracted American buyers to the S-10 in 1982 are still there in force: strong styling, highly maneuverable size, interior comfort, tough Chevy truck build, impressive hauling and towing capacities and the professional service available at nearly 5000 Chevy dealerships nationwide. The 88 version of the basic S-10 also appeals with a choice of 2WD or 4x4 models, 6-ft. or 7-ft. 5-in. cargo box, a hardworking 2.5 Liter Tech IV engine with Electronic Fuel Injection, a fully synchronized 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive (4-speed automatic in the Chassis-Cab model) and a fully independent front suspension. Other standards include - A 1000-lb. payload capacity. A 2000-lb. towing capacity for a properly equipped S-10 Pickup, including trailer, passengers and cargo. A 3-passenger vinyl bench seat of full-foam construction, with folding backrest and generous stowage space behind the seat. (Front bucket seats are optional.)A full complement of insulation and sound-deadening material in the spacious cab. Steel-belted all-season M+S (Mud and Snow)-rated radial tires. AM radio (may be deleted for credit). A full-size spare tire. A 20-gallon fuel tank

SPORT TRIM

Take S-10's finest optional trim level (the Sport), apply it to a special extended cab (the Maxi-Cab model with optional seating for up to four adults) and you have some fairly compelling reasons to give the S-10 Pickup your close attention. The Sport trim package (also available with Regular Cab S-10 models) includes all Tahoe option package items plus a number of additions or substitutions.

THE MAXI-CAB.

The Maxi-Cab has a longer-than-standard wheelbase (122.9 inches) which gives Maxi-Cab 18.4 cu. ft. of in-cab cargo space behind the standard bench seat. Or the space can be used for passengers, as shown, by ordering optional front bucket seats and rear jump seats. To convert the space behind the front bucket seat-backs to an open storage area. simolv fold the rear jump seats up and out of the way. Result: 13.7 cu. ft. of cargo space behind the buckets.

THE 4X4 S-10.

It's solid proof that rugged 4x4 traction, tough Chevy construction and strong styling will get you just about anywhere. The 4x4 S-10 proves its off-road prowess every year, not just to weekend adventurers, but in professional racing. One recent example: An S-10 (specially modified with required safety equip-ment) ran away with the Class 7 4x4 Championship in the 1986 SCORE/HDRA racing campaign. The winning 4x4 S-10 had the same 2.8 Liter V6 and 4-speed automatic that are available to you. Plus a lot of 4x4 S-10 standard equipment:

THE BACK COUNTRY OPTION.

Make a closer inspection of the 4x4 S-10 and you'll see why it looks so muscular. This pickup is sporting a rugged off-road appearance package that's available for any 4x4 S-10 model. This Back Country option can convert any 4x4 S-10 ordered with base or Tahoe trim into a "street version of the 1986 winner of the SCORE/HDRA Class 7 4x4 Championship. Package includes: Front grille guard with driving lamps and headlight brush hoops. Light bridge with off-road lamps. Tubular rear bumper. Switches in instrument panel for driving/off-road lamps. Black-chrome accent on wheels, headlight and taillight bezels and grille. Striping around wheel openings and front of hood.
